Boat Maintenance Schedule: What to Do and When

There is no universal boat maintenance schedule, and any article that gives you one without caveats is guessing. The real schedule is in your engine manual and your equipment manuals — those intervals are specific to your machine and they take precedence over anything here. What a generic schedule can usefully give you is the rhythm: a short list of things after every trip, a slightly longer one each month in season, a proper annual service, and a handful of jobs that come round every few years.
Below is that rhythm, in plain order. Treat it as a starting checklist to compare against your own manuals, not as a substitute for them.
The rule that beats every interval
Engine service intervals are almost always written as "every X hours or every Y months, whichever comes first" — and the second half is the half people ignore. A boat that runs 30 hours a season still needs its annual oil change, because oil absorbs moisture and acids sitting still, and a boat that sits is doing exactly that.
Three other things shift every interval on this page:
- Salt water versus fresh. Salt shortens the life of almost everything metal and makes flushing and anode inspection far more important.
- Freezing climate versus year-round use. A boat that winters ashore gets an annual layup and commissioning cycle. A boat in warm water year-round never stops running, so its wear items come round on hours rather than seasons.
- How the boat is stored. Trailered, dry-stacked, in a slip, or on a mooring — each changes what needs attention and how often.
After every trip
Ten minutes at the dock, and it prevents most of the expensive surprises:
- Rinse the boat with fresh water, including deck hardware and any stainless. On an outboard or stern drive in salt water, flush the engine as the manufacturer specifies.
- Check the bilge. Not just whether it is dry, but whether anything new is in it: oil, coolant, fuel smell, or salt crust. A leak you find at the dock is cheaper than one you find later.
- Look at the engine, quickly. Oil level, coolant level in a closed system, any weeping or drips, and belt condition.
- Log the hours and anything odd. "Slight vibration at 2800 RPM" written down today is a diagnosis in three months. Guessing at it later is not.
- Charge or confirm charging on the batteries, and switch off what should be off.
- Close the canvas, secure lines and fenders, and check the shore power connection is sound rather than warm.
Monthly, in season
- Test the bilge pump and its float switch by lifting the float, not by pressing the manual switch. Automatic operation is the part that saves the boat.
- Drain water from the fuel filter or water separator, and note if it keeps coming back — that is a tank or a deck fill telling you something.
- Check hoses and clamps you can reach, especially below the waterline: double clamps, no rust bleeding, no soft or swollen sections.
- Look at the anodes you can see. Half-eaten is normal; gone is not.
- Inspect the propeller for line, damage, and play, and the shaft or stern drive for weeping.
- Check steering through full lock, feeling for stiffness or slop, and grease what the manual says to grease.
- Confirm the safety gear is aboard and in date — life jackets for everyone aboard, extinguishers charged, distress signals unexpired.
- On a sailboat, walk the rig: terminals, swages, cotter pins, sail damage, and chafe where lines cross anything.
Once a year
This is the real service, and it usually lands with the haul-out or at spring commissioning:
- Engine oil and filter, and gear or lower-unit oil. On a diesel, also the fuel filters and, per the manual, the air filter and valve clearances.
- Raw-water impeller. Most manufacturers specify annual replacement or annual inspection with replacement on a fixed interval. This is a cheap part whose failure overheats an engine in minutes.
- Spark plugs on a petrol engine, plus distributor and ignition components where fitted.
- Belts and hoses. Inspect all, replace anything cracked, glazed, soft, or older than the interval in the manual.
- Anodes. Replace anything half gone rather than nursing it another season.
- Seacocks. Exercise every one, service or replace anything stiff, and check the hoses and double clamps on each.
- Batteries. Clean terminals, check securing, and load-test rather than trusting a resting voltage.
- Bilge pumps, float switches, alarms. Test each, including high-water alarms and CO and smoke detectors.
- Fire extinguishers and safety gear dates — see what expires when.
- Bottom paint and the underwater gear, which is its own decision rather than an annual certainty: how often a boat needs hauling and painting.
- Trailer, if you have one: bearings, brakes, lights, tyres including the spare, and the coupler and safety chains. Trailer bearings are the most commonly neglected item in the whole of boating.
- On a sailboat, a rig check from a rigger's eye — furling gear serviced, halyards inspected, winches stripped and greased.
Every few years
- Engine coolant in a closed cooling system, on the manual's interval — usually a few years, and it protects the most expensive part of the boat.
- Fuel hoses. They carry a date code and a rated life. Replace on age, not on appearance.
- Flexible exhaust hose and water-lift muffler components, per manufacturer guidance.
- Standing rigging on a sailboat. There is no legal interval, but riggers commonly talk in terms of ten to fifteen years or a set mileage, and insurers frequently impose their own requirement — which is set by the underwriter, not by regulation, so ask yours rather than assuming.
- Cutless bearing, shaft seal, rudder bearing, on wear rather than calendar.
- Liferaft service and EPIRB or PLB batteries, on the manufacturer's stated interval.
- Water heater and holding-tank plumbing, LPG hoses and regulators, and any hose that has gone hard.
Write it down, or it did not happen
Every item above produces two things: a job done and a piece of evidence. The second one is what most owners lose.
The habit that pays is boring: after any work — yours or a yard's — note the date, the engine hours, what was done, what parts went in, and what it cost, and keep the invoice with it. Photograph anything that will be invisible afterwards. Photograph the packaging of the impeller and the filter, if that is easier than writing part numbers down.
Three reasons this is worth the two minutes:
- It sets the next interval honestly. "Impeller — done" is useless. "Impeller replaced 14 June, 412 hours" tells you exactly when the next one is due.
- It is the difference in a warranty or insurance conversation. Both tend to ask for proof of maintenance, and both accept documents rather than recollections.
- It is money at resale. Two identical boats, one with a maintenance file and one without, do not sell for the same price — and the one with the file sells faster, because the buyer's surveyor has less to guess about.
